Joe Bruce Smith, age 73, concluded his journey on October 1, 2026, exactly as he lived it—surrounded by the people who loved him most—leaving behind a worn-out tackle box, a garage full of half-disassembled projects that somehow always worked, and a family that adored him.
Born on November 22, 1952, Papa Joe grew up with a curious mind and a deep love for the outdoors. He was a man who could fix anything—especially if it required zip ties, duct tape, and stubborn patience—and if he couldn’t fix it, he’d happily spend hours in the garage taking it apart just to see how it worked. His toolbox was legendary, a sacred space of old coffee cans filled with mismatched screws, spare parts, and tools he had modified to perfection. We never needed to buy anything—Papa Joe either had it in his supplies or could make something work. And poor Debbie, on the days it was too cold to go outside! He would drive her insane—he just never could sit still.
When he wasn’t “Joe-bobbing” in the garage, he could be found on the water, looking for sandbass boiling or watching his bobber for the next hungry crappie. He didn’t always catch the biggest fish, but he always left happy, relaxed, and ready for the next trip.
Above all, Papa Joe loved his family. He treated being a daddy and granddaddy the same way he approached his favorite hobbies: with a steady hand, a quiet, gentle presence, and a willingness to lend a hand whenever something broke—whether it was a bicycle chain, an alternator belt in the car he told you not to buy, or a broken heart.
Papa Joe was preceded in death by his parents, James and LaRuth Smith, and his sweetheart, Debbie, who passed away exactly six months before him. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, his best buddy Scooter, and close friends. He also leaves behind an unimaginable collection of tools and fishing lures that will be cherished and kept in good use by those he taught to change their oil and cast a line.
Memorial services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the Asa Smith Memorial Chapel. Cremation has been affected.
