Leon Albert Ashford

January 1, 1956 — May 18, 2025

Harrah

Leon Albert Ashford, beloved husband, brother, son, and friend, passed away on May 18, 2025, in Midwest City, Oklahoma, at the age of 69. He was born on January 1, 1956, in Oklahoma City to Marion and Wilmetta (Clow) Ashford.

Leon was a proud graduate of Carl Albert High School, Class of 1974. A lifelong learner, he continued his education at Oklahoma State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Wildlife Ecology, and later achieved a master’s degree in Environmental Health with additional work in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Oklahoma. A dedicated environmental scientist, Leon devoted his career to public service with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, beginning his tenure there in January 1995. He enjoyed fond friendship with his coworkers at DEQ.

Leon married the love of his life, Kimberly Michele Tillery, in April 1982. Together, they built a warm and welcoming home in Harrah, Oklahoma, where their love and partnership flourished for over four decades. Leon was a devoted husband who cherished Kimberly and treated her with enduring love, friendship and support—always making sure she felt like a queen.

A man of many passions, Leon was a lifelong fan of the Oklahoma State Cowboys and was rarely seen without his signature OSU orange. He was a Cowboy Wrestling season ticket holder for several years. He had a deep appreciation for classic rock music (attending more than 30 concerts), loved tending to his yard, taking Oklahoma road trips and found joy and wonder in birdwatching—especially when he caught sight of a bald eagle in flight. He loved to cook in the kitchen with Kimberly, and especially liked good barbecue, shrimp and chocolate. He enjoyed time with his rescue cat, Dolly, and tending to his rock collection. If you see an eagle in flight, take a moment and think of Leon and smile.

Though he faced recent health challenges, he not once complained, and he maintained a cheerful and positive disposition at all times. Particularly in this phase of their life, he was Kimberly’s hero and role model.

Leon was preceded in death by his father, Marion Ashford. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kimberly Michele Ashford of the home; his mother, Wilmetta Ashford of Oklahoma City; his brother, Dewayne Ashford (Brenda) of Newalla, Oklahoma; and his sister, Carolyn Allen (Rick) of Harrah, Oklahoma, as well as three nephews and two nieces. He is also survived by many loving in-laws.
